Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society launches £1,000 scholarship
The Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society has announced a £1,000 scholarship open to all qualified students studying agriculture and related subjects.
The Society’s 2022 Scholarship was launched to provide additional financial support for students whose family home is in the county.
The scholarship is open to students studying Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Agricultural Engineering, Food Technology, Forestry, or other agriculture-related subjects.
The scholarship is tax-free and will be awarded to the student who, in the opinion of a jury, has submitted the best essay on how the scholarship will help them complete their program of study.
The latest recipient of the award was Gracie Morris, 21, from St. Davids, who was in her final year at Harper Adams University studying Agriculture with Crop Management.
“It was an honor and a privilege to be awarded the Pembrokeshire County Show Scholarship in 2019,” she said.
“The scholarship allowed me to undertake research for my final thesis on biofumigation to control Rhizoctonia solani in potatoes.”
“The scholarship allowed me to have financial security during my last year of studies. Most of my free time was spent on research for my thesis, so having a part-time job alongside university was not possible for me.
Gracie recommends that qualified students apply for the scholarship: “I urge all Pembrokeshire students studying subjects clearly aligned with agriculture to apply for this scholarship.
“It will not only help you in your studies, but also give you great experiences, such as performing an interview, which is a key job skill. It will also help you in your future career in the agricultural industry.”
The company said eligible students must not have won the scholarship before and must be studying or have been accepted to study agriculture or related subjects at a UK college or university at A level or above. Applicants’ family home must also be in Pembrokeshire.
Rob James, chairman of the company’s scholarship committee, said: “A panel of independent judges, chaired by a representative of the company, will establish a short list of candidates who will be interviewed.
The winning contestant will be invited to make a short presentation at an upcoming meeting of the society’s show board.
“The level of applications has always been exceptional, which is heartening that there are many very talented young people in our community.
“We look forward to receiving applications for this year’s scholarship and hearing from the younger generation.”
To participate, students must submit a 1,000-word essay titled “How the Scholarship Will Help My Career Progress”.
The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, July 1, 2022.
