Producer prices of agricultural products, August 2021 up 13.3% year on year

Producer prices for agricultural products increased by 13.3% in August 2021 compared to the same month in 2020, up 1.2% compared to July 2021. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 23.4% price increase for plant products in August 2021 compared to August 2020 is mainly due to the increase in grain prices, as in previous months.

For market garden and horticultural products, the price increase over one year in August 2021 was 11.9%. This is partly explained by a 16.9% increase in the prices of plants and flowers.

Prices for vegetables as a whole rose 8.5% in August 2021 compared to the same month a year earlier. The price increases were more significant, especially for lettuce with + 61.7%. This is due to the current low supply volumes in the market.

For table potatoes, prices increased 21.2% year on year. This is the first price increase since September 2019. As of July 2021, the year-on-year price decline was still -23.0. Prices increased in August 2021 due to low harvest volumes and the resulting limited supply in the market.
