Stop auctioning farmland of farmers who failed to repay their loans: Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot

Jaipur (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday issued instructions to halt the auctioning of farmlands of farmers who have failed to repay loans taken from commercial banks in the state.

Due to non-payment of farmers’ loans taken from Reserve Bank of India controlled commercial banks in the state, land seizure and auctions are being taken under the Land Operations Act 1974. agricultural credit of Rajasthan (removal of difficulties). government officials have been instructed to stop this,” he said in a statement.

The chief minister also said that the state government had waived loans from cooperative banks and urged the Center to waive loans to farmers by making a one-time settlement with commercial banks. The state government is also ready to do its part, he said.

“Our government had passed a bill in the assembly to prohibit the auctioning of land to farmers with farmland up to five acres, but due to the lack of permission from the governor, this is not yet become a law. I am sad that due to the non-compliance of this law, the said situation has arisen, he noted.

Gehlot expressed hope that the bill will soon be approved.

Notably, many cases of issuance of land auction notices to farmers, who are unable to repay loans, have recently been reported. The main opposition party, the BJP, has also targeted the Congress-led state government over the issue.
