The new $5.7M facility at the Agricultural Society of Ancaster is set to open in February 2022

The Ancaster Agricultural Society expects to complete its new 75,000 square foot building by the end of February 2022.

“We are so excited for the day we can officially open this new facility,” said Al Payne, Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee.

Company director Tammy Quinn said “construction is progressing” with the recent installation of underfloor heating and gas hook-up. The building is expected to close soon. She said events were already planned for the new building, located on Trinity Road South, in February, when it will be ready for occupancy.

Quinn said the project was delayed due to COVID-19, but officials managed to be “ahead of the curve” in securing materials.

Construction on the new 75,000 square foot facility began in 2020 after the completion of the Cormorant Road extension through Ancaster Business Park to Trinity Road, allowing the organization to connect to the city sewers.

The $5.7 million facility expansion was scheduled to begin in fall 2020, with a tentative completion date of September 2021, in time to host the 171st Ancaster Fair. However, the pandemic has canceled most large gatherings in the city over the past two years.

The new exhibition center building will be located adjacent to Marritt Hall, the main exhibition area of ​​the exhibition center.

The new facility is expected to help the Ancaster Agricultural Society become the “first” destination for equestrian and breeding events, as well as trade shows and large receptions in southern Ontario.

Building will have oversized doors to accommodate large equipment, stadium bleachers for seating, heating system for year-round use, expanded area for 100 barns, electrical hookups for trailers, indoor washrooms , a kitchen/concession area, a sound system and two indoor walking tracks.

Quinn said the company is expecting a big 2022 with around 75% of event dates filled for the two main buildings so far.

“It’s a great economic development opportunity for the town to have people come into the community,” she said.

Meanwhile, past presidents of the Ancaster Fair launched a matching challenge with a $65,000 donation to support the agricultural society. The pandemic had forced the popular Ancaster Fair to be closed to the public for two years.

“It’s such a big challenge,” Quinn said. “Past presidents really want to involve the community. And people can revisit some of their favorite memories at the fair. »

The challenge, titled “Be a Gamechanger” and scheduled to run from November 25 to December 31, involves past presidents encouraging the community to support the fair financially. Quinn said there is hope that in 2022 people will be able to return to the Ancaster Fair and enjoy its 172nd anniversary from September 22-25.
